Your Birth Experience
Research shows that well women choosing to labour and birth at Waterford (a primary birth centre), have a higher normal birth rate with better outcomes for mum and baby.
Of the women who started labour at Waterford Birth Centre, 97% birthed vaginally. The caesarean section rate was 3%, compared to the national rate of 27%.
Spacious birth rooms provide labouring women freedom to move through the stages of labour in their own way. Each room offers a birth pool, showers equipped with hanging bars, beanbags, rockers, birthing balls and stools. Appropriate emergency equipment supports you and your baby’s safety in the birth room.
Your LMC provides your labour care. Our team of skilled and experienced staff midwives are on site to assist your LMC with your labour and birth.
Once baby is born, you can enjoy uninterrupted skin-to-skin contact, with time to bond and start your breastfeeding journey. When ready, a short walk down the corridor takes you, your partner and baby, to your large postnatal room for your stay, supported by our wonderful staff.
Your Postnatal Stay
After birth, you stay with us for up to 48 hours (or two full nights) and enjoy peace and privacy as you welcome your new baby to your family. Your room has a double bed, and for baby either a bassinette, clip on side cot or a pepi-pod for nearness and safety during this important bonding time.
You will enjoy uninterrupted rest supported in our soundproof rooms, with the discreet, nurturing care you need to recover from your birth. Rooms do not have call bells or buzzers, instead, to speak to a midwife you pick up the phone at your bedside. Our staff midwives check in with you and your baby regularly. They are available day and night to answer questions and provide quality postnatal care and services, along with daily support from your own LMC.
Family and friends are welcome to visit between the hours of 10-12pm and 4-8pm.
Delicious meals are provided, and our housekeeping staff will service your room twice a day.
Our staff are always respectful of your time and space as they work to make your time with us as comfortable as possible.
Your partner or birth support person is invited to stay with you to be a valuable support while you both learn the new skills feeding, bathing and caring for your newborn.
We have a range of breastfeeding resources, including DVD based breastfeeding support.
Hearing screeners visit daily to test your baby’s hearing. A private paediatrician visits as required.
